All the old news from the distant past for you fact-fondling Stabilisers Anoraks.

Back to the real new News page. The future is where it's at. Or will be.

13/2/06 Time for a little rest..
Just back from our little series of gigs in France and Belgium with Captain Kirk. Two great gigs and one sadly curtailed because of unhappy neighbours. Still, it was a good weekend and we'd like to thank Captain Kirk and particularly Bernard for organising everything. We'll be back! There'll be a live MP3 or two soon, and maybe even a bit video footage.
So after all the excitement, now we've got a couple of months off from gigging while Lord Corbey swans off to recharge his stately batteries and get his head together. In the meantime, the rest of us will slave away getting the new album ready for a Spring release. The clue to who is releasing the album is buried in the first paragraph below and there is a prize for whoever finds it first. Actually there isn't, so don't get excited. But we'll have more news very soon..

3/2/06 Belated Happy New Year wishes from The Stabilisers.
Yes, we have a new label for our next release. Things are progressing: the album is recorded and the artwork is nearly ready. There will also be a 7" 45rpm single, and both will be released in late Spring. We're not going to say who it is until we've formally put pen to paper (we've already had two other labels go belly up just on the point of putting our stuff out). However, buried somewhere in this update is a big clue...
The new year is traditionally a time for us all to indulge in groundless optimism and make pathetic and misguided resolutions to improve our physical and mental well being. We also allowed ourselves to wallow in this temporary sea of self-delusion some time before Christmas when we set ourselves the task of finding a new label for our next album in 2006. Trouble is, a couple of days later it was suddenly all sorted, as I mentioned. All too easy we think, and also we didn't have any resolutions to nag away at our conscience for the first week of January. So we've come up with some alternatives, and we hope you will be kind enough to urge us to keep to them if you happen to come to our gigs:
Jon has resolved to babble incomprehensibly into the microphone between songs, Allan has pledged to wear a hat and scowl a lot, His Lordship has promised to look faintly bemused, and Francis has undertaken to drop his sticks every couple of minutes. We're going to try really hard to keep to these resolutions thoughout the year, but it will be tough...
We have some gigs in France and Belgium coming up, details here.

19/12/05 Yes, all the bids are in and barring any late entries from Sony or V2, we'll have an announcement to make very soon about who'll be releasing the next single and album.
We've got some gigs coming up in February in Belgium and France - details on the way.

11/11/05 Short announcement... we're now on the hunt for a label to put out our second album. It's pretty much finished and even if we say so ourselves it is a corker, even better than the first one. If you are the mother, father, son, daughter, niece, nephew, brother in law, friend, acquaintance, pen friend, enemy, whatever, of someone who works for or who knows someone who works for a half decent, open minded independent label, please let us know. We may pay you an introduction fee if you provide us with the crucial contact. With the emphasis on 'may'.
PS You will find a couple of our stunning new tracks on our MySpace page. And they're not even the best ones.

21/10/05 Dirty Water Club gig Friday October 21st - Some thoughts....
Tonight's gig at the Dirty Water club will be the first time we've played there not supporting the Buff Medways... But that also means it's the first time we've played there without having to use the Buffs PA. This means there's a chance the audience might be able to hear some of Jon's erudite lyrics, inventive swearing and our pristine Beach Boy-like harmonies without that distinctive hand-held tannoy distortion. We've never been able to work out how come Mr Childish always sounds great through it and everyone else sounds like they're using an electric kazoo (copyright 'tube train' by us, Evil Picnic EP). A valve powered electric kazoo that hasn't been serviced for 20 years. We wrote a song specially to celebrate this enigma, called 'Shit PA'. One day we'll play it at a gig, but there's always the chance that some sensitive sound engineer will take it as a personal insult and pull the plug. Having said that, most PA's sound a bit rubbish these days (with a few honourable exceptions), usually far too loud, with a hideous bowel loosening kick drum and brain shredding treble. So on second thoughts maybe everyone would be better off with the electric kazoo and just turning it down a bit...

17/10/05 Coming soon - The Stabilisers very own forum. Insult us at your cyber-leisure and then see how long it takes for us to delete your comment and replace it with fawning blandishments. Watch this space for more news.
Oh yes... WE'RE PLAYING AT THE DIRTY WATER CLUB, TUFNELL PARK THIS FRIDAY 20th OCTOBER!! Check the gig page for more...

9/10/05 We've penetrated the world of geeks, freaks, bloggers, self-publicists, borderline psychos, obsessive compulsives and outright fantasists by getting our own bit of MySpace, specially for the Stabilisers. It's here http://www.myspace.com/thestabilisers . Go and have a peek, register, and leave your greetings, observations or even personal abuse for us to peruse at our leisure. There are also some brand new recordings there for your aural stimulation.

3/10/05
LATE GIG ADDED! It's on Thursday 6th October at Clockword, Pentonville Road, Islington. we're on around 9.30 or so.
See the GIGS page for details.

19/09/05 Fab gear! Stabilisers t-shirts now available from this website!
After much soul searching and many brainstorming business meetings, we've decide to think outside the box and leverage our core assets in the market place. Previously we've only sold our t-shirts at gigs, to keep their exclusive appeal. But as we've got rakes of the bloody things laying about and only the odd gig lined up for the next few weeks, we're making them available on this site. Go to the Buy Stuff page to see these outstanding examples of modern design for yourself. And then buy one.
Mind you, they'll still be slightly cheaper at our gigs...

15/09/05 'Why doesn't anyone hate us?' is the question. We're still waiting for our first real slag off....
Another great review...Have a look at this. It's from a great new site called Sohostrut that's having a lot of hits, and they like us!
Our next gig is at Soul Bowl at the Citrus Bowl in Barnsley on the 30th September, with the Freebooting Profiteers. Details and flyer here.
Thanks to the Len Price 3 for putting on the gig at the Tap 'n' tin the other day - our best one for a while.

22/08/05 Stabilisers turn out to be rad-cool snowboard band shock!
Who'd h'a tho't it eh? Sequence Magazine is glossy, high quality Italian publication dedicated to the art of snowboarding. And for some unexplained reason, we have had two tracks chosen to accompany the flashy visuals on the accompanying DVD. It's mostly shaggy young men in mirrored shades flying about on things that look like skateboards without wheels. Erm, on snow. Have a look here to get an idea. We're not quite sure how it happened but what the hell, let's get down with the kids eh? The two tracks are '100 year old riff' and 'Diagonal Man', both slightly edited to fit the visuals. It's a good job those cool boarding dudes (as opposed to cool balding dudes) didn't listen to the lyrics of Diagonal Man. Still, are we bothered? Look at our faces.

28/07/05 The gig on August 2nd at the Windmill has been postponed.

Download and print this flyer for our gig at the Borderline on Tuesday 26th July and save ££££s! We're on at 8.30 sharp...

20/7/05 Something is afoot in the Stabilisers camp.... Well we thought it was, but I've deleted all the details as of 9/11/2005, as it was obvious that something wasn't afoot at all, and that the person who led us to believe that things may be afoot was a bit of a chancer who would later disappear without trace. By his own volition, I hasten to add.

9/6/05 LATE GIG ADDED! STOP THE PRESS! STOP PICKING YOUR NOSE!
We're playing with the Len Price 3 (a fellow Medway based trio. I say 'fellow', but only 1 of us is from Medway. But we all love the place, irrespective of where we come from. It's the rocknroll centre of the Universe. Possibly.) at the Windmill, Brixton on Friday 17th June. The LP3 also played the Liverpool IPO with us a couple of weeks ago, and impressed us with their garage punk stylings. Obviously not quite as good as us but they do sport rather fetching matching stripey t-shirts, in contrast to our more freestyle approach to stripes. They also did a live Radio 2 session they other day. No way are we jealous.

6/6/05 Wimbledon AFC conquered. Route One football submits to punk-pop. Or something
Another top gig on Friday, this time at the Give and Go club at Wimbledon AFC. Not the biggest audience we've ever played to, but then it wasn't the smallest either. Most of them were over 5ft 6in, which is about average for punk (I believe Rock audiences are a little taller, but that may be the washed and conditioned hair, which gives you that crucial extra centimetre). A more enthusiastic and friendly bunch of people you couldn't wish to meet. They were buying our CDs before we'd even played, which is a bit of a leap of faith when you consider what we look like (extremely handsome, like a boy band making a comeback as mature adults). If you want to find out what they thought of us, have an eavesdrop on this blog-forum type thing here: http://www.weirdandwonderfulworld.com/cgi-bin/guestbook?searchtext=stabilisers (that address found by our dedicated Stabilisers search engine, combing the interweb for references to us, 24 hours a day. Or Jon Bott, as he is otherwise known).
We've got some gigs coming up in Yorkshire and Manchester in September - more details as soon as have them. And we should have some news about future releases fairly soon as well. Things are starting to move in the Stabilisers camp, and it's not just our bowels.

31/05/05 Liverpool conquered. The Stabilisers are younger than the Beatles - OFFICIAL
The Liverpool International Pop Overthrow Festival was a useful return to gigging after a few weeks kicking our heels... Our first appearance was the graveyard slot at 2.45pm in Rubber Soul. Completely empty apart from a few mates and brave souls venturing in from Mathew Street when they heard our cultured racket and impressive swearing. But it was a good live rehearsal, and those that watched us were very positive, and bought a few CDs and the like. We also encountered a fan with a home-made Stabilisers badge, lovingly constructed with a downloaded logo from this website, which was rather touching. Obviously we confiscated it and demanded a cut of the royalties, simultaneously issuing a writ for breach of copyright. Official Stabilisers badges are available from us at gigs and all proceeds will go to the defence fund of the aforementioned fan.
(That last bit was a joke by the way. We wouldn't be that cruel. All proceeds will be donated to the Cats Protection League.)
The evening's gig at the Cavern was 'fab', as I believe the phrase goes. On an authentic replica of what the original Cavern might have looked like if it had been built underneath a shopping centre, we played a blistering set that had the punters frugging in the aisle. 'Twas wondrous to behold, and over all too quickly. A big hand to David Bash and the various clubs involved for getting it together, and all for free.
Next stop Wimbledon AFC (see gigs) for an attempt at the world keepy uppy record while playing punkpop.

26/05/05 The tide turns in our favour...spirits rise...nation shall speak unto nation.
After a frustrating and barren few weeks, full of cancelled gigs, horrific DIY accidents, broken love affairs, artistic differences and lost plectrums, The good ship Stabiliser seems to be back on course. We've got a few gigs coming in, loads of super smashing great new songs, and a few exciting prospects that we'll keep under our shit coloured hats until they happen (or don't.)
We're in the spiritual home of European football this weekend (that's Liverpool, not Gillingham), playing the International Pop Overthrow festival at venues around Mathew Street. We'll be at Rubber Soul at 2.45pm then The Cavern Club at 6pm on Sunday (29th). Bring your red scarves. No Beatles covers.
See our gigs page for more details of all our upcoming dates. On a continuing football theme, we're playing at Wimbledon AFC's Give and Go club on June 4th. Route One all the way.

4/05/05 Gig cancelled....again.
Our esteemed guitarist and resident member of the landed gentry, Lord Corbey of Tufnell Park, has done his back in carrying a washing machine. Quite what he was doing carrying white goods around the place when he has numerous servants employed for that very purpose, we can but guess. At least it shows that he is keeping in touch with the common man. The upshot of this unfortuntate incident is that he is unable to drag himself onto the stage for a couple of weeks. So our much anticipated gig at the Loaded Dog on Friday 6th has been cancelled.
I'm sure we'll play again one day. Next scheduled gig is Liverpool on 29th May, unles we're all maimed in some sort of freak washing up accident. Bah.

2/05/05 Gig details changed.... and yet another top review
Our proposed gig at the Alma on Saturday 7th May has been changed. Apparently The Alma has had its music license suspended because of excessive noise levels. Couldn't have been us your honour, we've only got tiny amps. Anyway, the gig has been shifted to a place called the Loaded Dog, 485 High Road, Leytonstone, on Friday (6th). Or at least that's what we think it's called. It used to be the Cowley anyway. Why not come down and see what's it's called yourself. And see us.
And talking of how wonderful we are, we've got yet another decent review, this time of our classic 'Evil Picnic' crackly vinyl only EP. This time it's from a German website called Daredevil. Look at the original here, or have a perusal of our complete list of 5 star reviews on our reviews page. I never read reviews myself. What effect does it have on an artist if he starts to believe his reviews, especially when they're all as fantastic as ours? Turns you into a bloated egomaniac, that's what. And I'm wonderful enough already without falling for that. Darling.

21/04/05 Return of the dolphin ticklers

Yep, we got some gigs for you and another review. If you can't find them you shouldn't be trusted with your own hands. Donate them to medical research now.

1/04/05 You can't keep a good band down

Things are looking up. The Skipping Musez site is finally working again (the label that released our 1st album). There's a couple of new reviews and I've put up a new mp3 as well - it's called Drunk Again. Enjoy. Oh there is some more pics as well. And I've fixed my car after being off the road for ages. Top.

This news section is updated by both Jon and Allan - can you guess who did which entries?

Are you bothered?

29/03/05 And more bloody cancellations…
.... I’ll be tempted to say something more satisfyingly profane than ‘Bah’ soon (see below). It doesn’t quite convey the frustration, irritation and sheer ‘I really am quite annoyed’-ness of having gigs cancelled. There we were with a load of gigs lined up supporting the Buzzcocks, the Punk Aid festival and a couple of Italian gigs all in April. Now we’ve lost all of ‘em for various reasons. I know it doesn’t rank up there with global warming and natural disasters, but for your average jobbing musician, cancelled gigs do produce a cloud of sulky gloom on a par with a child having its favourite toy withdrawn. Yes, we’re just kids at heart, and about as mature. We can add this disappointment to the fact that our proposed EP with 24 Records has been shelved for the time being. Pity, it would have been a scorcher. But we will be back, full of the joys of Spring as soon as we’ve brought our four leaf clovers, rabbits feet, lucky hats and various hexes and curses to bear on those who would stand in our way…

On a more positive note, we’ve had another scorching album review in a another top Italian mag. This time it’s Rockerilla. I’ll be putting a copy of that up very soon.

15/03/05 Punk Aid has been cancelled
.... All we can say to that is Bah. And Bah again. And thrice Bah. Another avenue of pleasure closed. Won't bore you with too many details, but it is connected with the withdrawing of money by sponsors. Not the fault of the organisers - hopefully it will be happen in the future and the cerebral palsy charity won't be deprived of the needed funds for too long.

On the plus side, our support slot with the Buzzcocks at the Mick Jagger Centre, Dartford has been confirmed. We'll put up more details soon. And of course I'll be back to ramble on about not much at all as soon as I've got something to write about...

01/03/05 Songs that make you go hmmmmm
And so another month slips into the past, lengthening our memories and yet shortening our lives. That's some sort of bitter lesson for us all don't you think? Anyway, it was a good one for the Stabilisers (for that is who we are). We recorded a brace of new songs for a forthcoming release, although at this stage we don't know which one of the multitude of labels queuing up for our services we'll deign to release it on. Sorry if that is too much of a tease, but we'll put up an mp3 of one of them very soon to give you a taste of our new prog-jazz direction.... That's so obviously a joke that I won't even bother to point it out. Apart from just then.

Any-golly-way, we also played with the Bureau at the Bordeline the other day, which was an all-round success. The Bureau are the original line-up of Dexy's Midnight Runners without Kevin Rowland, and of course the place was pretty packed, including a few minor celebrities. One of those was Mark Lamarr (if you're reading this Mr Lamarr, I apologise, but you know what I mean), who was forced to accept copies of our album and CD, together with the helpful and informative 'advice' that one of his recent Radio 2 shows had been 'shit', and therefore, logically speaking, he had a duty to play one of our songs to make up for having had to listen to said show. With that sort of networking expertise and charm, the sky's the limit with this band. Apart from that, we did a blistering set - 12 songs in 30 minutes. Maybe one of the best ones we've done.

We've now hooked up with an agency to get us more and better gigs - Vicious .They also deal with a whole bunch of classic punk bands, including Buzzcocks, ATV, Devo etc. And the good news is that we've got four support slots with Buzzcocks on their forthcoming UK tour in April. So far we've got Milton Keynes, Leeds, Newport and Dartford. We'll be putting up full details as soon as we have them.

We're hoping to get back to Italy at the end of April, so there'll more news on that as we get it..

Jon has written a new song called 'Mental illness is good for you.' If anyone would like to complain about this appalling and tasteless breach of good taste, 'Jerry Springer Opera'-style (ie before actually hearing the 'offending' piece), please send them to mail@thestabilisers.com, and we will foward your message to a selection of spammers at our discretion.

31/1/05 Slackness

We've been a bit lax keeping this page up to date recently. But then we're not bluggers, or whatever those people call themselves. We're just honest musicians, engaging in the noble pastime of bringing our subtle chord sequences and sublime vocal stylings to the attention of the art starved public. Keeping a website up to date is a bit of a chore once that initial excitement has receded. So anyway - here are a few snippets of news to keep your whistle whetted, to use an appalling and over-used cliche.

THIS NEXT BIT TURNED OUT TO BE COMPLETE SLOBLOCK. NOT OUR FAULT (IN HINDSIGHT). WHY ARE YOU READING OLD NEWS ANYWAY?
Our next release will be a CD EP on the up and coming London label, twentyfour records. We'll put a link to their website up as soon as someone tells us what it is. We're recording next weekend, and it's scheduled for release in March. That will be our 3rd release in 6 months. Apart from being commercial suicide, that's a release rate that even Billy Childish would struggle to keep up with... But we thought it was about time that we had something out in good old blighty, and we've got some good songs ready to record. Don't forget that our previous releases are also still available....

Today, apart from being the 2nd anniversary of the first gig by the current line-up of the Stabilisers, is also the birthday of our very own representative of the landed gentry, Lord Corbey de Brockley. Those of you wishing to pay some form of unseemly homage to the axe-tickling former peer can deliver your obseqious alms via our email address, mail@thestabilisers.com.

5/1/05

‘Well, how did the tour go?’ I hear both of you enquire eagerly. Well, it was FRIGGING GREAT. After 7 gigs and 2500 miles we returned home to sleep for about 48 hours, only to wake up and find that the whole experience already felt like some wondrous dream. Surely it couldn’t have happened… Friendly promoters, enthusiastic and plentiful punters, free beer, food and accommodation, no arguments about getting paid, no tetchy and incompetent soundmen who claim that miking up a bass drum with a front skin on is impossible.. All in all, everything that gigging in the UK isn’t!! I don’t know how England keeps its reputation as a great place for bands to play when you only have to travel a few hundred miles to find out how much better the whole thing is done by our European brothers and sisters. There are always exceptions on both sides, but we know which side of the channel wins every time… And it ain’t Blighty.

We’ll be putting up some tour photos, live stuff and maybe even some video very soon. Watch this space. If it’s possible to watch a space. I mean, how do you know when a space has moved?

NEW RELEASE!! Just before we went away we got some copies of the new vinyl 7” EP ‘Evil Picnic’. It’s great. Can’t beat a bit of scratchy vinyl for that authentic punknewwavegaragerocknrollmodpsych sound. You can get it from us at gigs or go straight to Nicotine Records and go to the shop section. They accept credit cards and Paypal for your added convenience and paranoia.

Apparently our wonderful ‘Last Chance Saloon’ CD features in no less than six (6) ‘Rumore’ journalists top 10 fave sounds of 2004! Rumore is sort of the Italian equivalent of Q or Mojo… We’ve yet to see proof of this claim, but we’re prepared to print speculation and hearsay as long as it makes us appear more popular than we possibly are..

1/12/04

Stabilisers Winter European Tour 2004

Yep some jolly nice blerk called Dirk has sorted us out a tour, starting Christmas Day and ending New Year's Eve. Just what we wanted, how did they know?

Dates so far are :

25.12. Germany - Munich - Atomic Café

26.12. Austria - Feldkirch - Sonderbar

28.12. Switzerland - Biel - Cupoule (+ Minds)

29.12. Germany - Bamberg - Bootshaus (+ Crazy Candydates + Hombre)

I've heard several tracks by The Minds and they are shit hot.

7/10/04 again but a bit later in the evening

Yet another good review is the reviews section - this time from UNPEELED. I trust this means we shall be playing at one of the Unpeeled nights at the Windmill soon, we'd definitely be up for it.

7/10/04

Apologies for the delay in notifying competition winners and sending out stuff - the computer that had all the e-mails on it had a major hard drive problem, which seems to have been cured by jiggling it about a bit and leaving the cover off. I'll pull the names out of a virtual hat very soon I promise.

29/9/04

Another good album review is up in the 'reviews' section - this time from 'Scootering' magazine. I'm thinking of inventing a new type of music called 'heavy scooter'.

The competition is now closed. Thanks to everybody who entered. I'll be selecting the winners randomly from the correct entries. Quite how everybody knew the right answer I'll never know.

The gig tomorrow at Belushi's is free!

16/9/04

COMPETITION TIME!

COMPETITION TIME!

Want to own a copy of our album 'Last Chance Saloon' but too much of a stingy mardface or Skinty McGinty to buy one? We are giving away a strictly limited number in an exciting quiz style competition!

To win, answer this simple question.

What colour is Allan Crockford's famous corduroy hat?

a) brownish

b) er, yeah, brown

c) shit coloured

E-mail your answers to

shitcolouredhatcompetition@thestabilisers.com - yes it really works

The judges' decision is final. No members of The Stabilisers, their spouses, partners, significant others etc. are allowed to enter because you've probably already got a copy and you may well know the answer to the question and nobody likes a greedy smart-arse now do they? Closing date is after 10 correct answers have been submitted or when I bloody feel like it. Winners will be notified via a series of death-threats. No purchase necessary but all donations gratefully received, so long as they are in cash. Always read the label. Contains a source of phenylallancrockfordine. Best before but still ok after.

9/9/04 Italy conquered!

Well, we did it. Got our guitars off the luggage carousels at Stansted after waiting for an hour and a half. A slightly tedious end to our first jaunt abroad, but it was worth it. Two successful festival gigs, one at a Communist festival in Verona and the other in Piacenza, and apparently enough footage of us acting like twats to make a video. We've been promised that it will appear on Italian MTV, but I'm not sure of the hunger to see a bunch of English idiots miming in front of a bouncy castle... Actually it looked OK on the playback. Made us laugh anyway, so who cares about anyone else... Oh the selfish (and probably short-lived) joy of being in a band!

Hear for yourselves a little snippet of our appearance in Piacenza in glorious low quality MP3. Recorded by someone waving a mike vaguely in the direction of the stage...

See for yourselves how sweaty we were on stage at the same festival...

'TAKING THE PISS' - our latest sub 2-minute twangfest is available to download in the mp3 section. It'll also be appearing on the forthcoming 45rpm EP entitled 'Evil Picnic' on NICOTINE RECORDS. 4 tracks of raucous high volume dinner disturbing punk.
